Benefits of Rosehip Oil for Skin

The use of rosehip oil for skin is an age-old practice valued by Chileans. It is used on the skin for a wide range of reasons. Here is more on how to use rosehip oil for skin problems such as acne, stretch marks, and rosacea.

Rosehip oil is then extracted from the seeds of Rosa rubiginosa and Rosa moschata- a type of wild rose that grows in the Andes region. It can also be extracted from Rosa canina which grows in the Europe and Southern Part of Africa.

It is nearly colorless and does not smell much. Rosehip oil is very light and does not have the thick oily feel on the skin. It soaks into your skin and is quickly absorbed.

Side Effects of Rosehip Oil

Most of the unwanted effects from rose hip oil are related to vitamin C present in the oil. Note that different products have different concentrations of vitamin C thus pose different effects. Side effects are evident with ingestion of large amounts.

  • Rosehip oil may cause allergic reactions when applied to the skin. It may cause irritation.
  • Ingesting rosehip oil could cause gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.
  • Ingesting rose hip oil increases the levels of estrogen in the body. This may cause interactions with drugs such as contraceptives.
  • Vitamin C may make blood more acidic aggravating the symptoms of sickle cell anemia
  • It may cause instability and spikes in blood sugar which could pose a danger for diabetics
  • The effects of rosehip oil on unborn children have not been studied adequately.
