However, this does not mean that it will always make the pimples go away. It might actually make them worse if you have sensitive skin or are allergic to any of the ingredients found in toothpaste.

Try out a small amount on another part of your body especially the back of your hand before putting toothpaste on pimples.

Side Effects of Using Toothpaste for Pimples

Let us find out how effective this method is for acne treatment and whether it is good for your face? Are there any side effects of using toothpaste on your skin? According to Dr. Neal Shultz, a New York-based Dermatologist, toothpaste contains ingredients that make pimples dry out.

Dr. Shultz adds that these ingredients do not make toothpaste any better than conventional and commercial products meant to treat acne. Ingredients such as Triclosan, alcohol, menthol, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda are responsible for the drying effect that toothpaste has on skin and pimples. This works well in tremendously reducing the healing time of acne.

Triclosan is an antibacterial agent. Just like it is in soap, it is used to kill bacteria. This is actually believed to be the other reason why toothpaste works on pimples. Triclosan is also added as a preservative in acne treatment products.

You should, however, note that toothpaste is very irritating and can burn out your skin causing excessive dryness, redness, and peeling of the skin. This might be a good option when you want to dry out a pimple fast but it is no way the best treatment for acne and zits breakouts. Drying and peeling of the skin may cause inflamed, broken skin. It makes an entry point for more acne-causing bacteria that will result in more breakouts.

Does toothpaste help with zits? Many skin care experts would not recommend this toothpaste for pimples and zits treatment because of the effects it has on skin. I would only suggest this method if you have no other home treatments for acne. If you woke up with a big zit on your forehead with a very important meeting or date to attend in a few hours, here is how to use toothpaste for pimples and zits.

  1. Choose your toothpaste. White toothpaste is the best
  2. Make sure your hands are clean before starting this procedure. This will prevent the transfer of bacteria to your face which might cause you more breakouts.
  3. Cleanse your face thoroughly and pat dry being careful not to break a pimple
  4. Use gloves or a soft sponge, squeeze a small amount of toothpaste and apply thinly to the zit and the area surrounding it. Some people suggest securing the paste with a band but this might cause the paste to spread to the surrounding areas.
  5. Let the paste dry for several hours, preferably overnight.
  6. To remove the toothpaste from your face, use a soft sponge and clean lightly with warm water being careful not to break the pimple as this might result in bleeding and ugly acne scars. You will notice that the pimple is dried out and less in size.

Does Toothpaste Get Rid of Pimples?

Will toothpaste make pimples go away overnight? Does toothpaste clear pimples?

Toothpaste does surely help with pimples. It dries them out and reduces their size. This makes them less noticeable. It is an effective quick fix for singly occurring pimples that are not yet inflamed or infected.

Does toothpaste remove pimples? I would personally not recommend this as a long-term treatment for acne and dark spots. It is best used as an emergency spot treatment to make pimples dry out and reduce healing time. However, keep off this home remedy for acne and zits if you have sensitive and easily irritable skin.

Test your skin to find out whether you are allergic to any of the ingredients on toothpaste before you decide to use on your face to treat zits. This means that toothpaste can make your pimples worse especially if they are already inflamed.

NB: Do not apply toothpaste all over your face if you have more than one pimple. It will dry you all out and make your face red and inflamed.

Avoid teeth whitening toothpastes– these contain bleaching agents that might burn the skin and make the pimples more noticeable. DO NOT use teeth whitening toothpastes for pimples if you are dark skinned as the extra melanin makes you more prone to blemishes.

Gel toothpastes are not good at all. They may be lacking in the active ingredients that are effective in getting rid of pimples. They also have a different formulation.

Organic toothpastes– I recommend this as the best toothpaste for pimple treatment. This is because it has no fluoride and other harsh chemicals that may irritate your skin. They also contain natural ingredients such as Aloe Vera and tea tree oil that will be an added advantage in the treatment of pimples.

Choose White colored toothpaste– the zit zapping ingredients like baking soda, triclosan and hydrogen peroxide are contained in the white part of toothpaste. Colored toothpastes contain ingredients that irritate skin. Avoid products with red, green or blue stripes.
